“Unfortunately, we have to be claiming for the return of a comrade who was in solidarity with the struggle of the Mapuche people,” Liempe said.
“We demand the safe return of Santiago Maldonado,” she remarked and added that “the genocide still prevailing against native communities has intensified in recent years.”
“We hold the Argentine state responsible with all its instruments of repression for the disappearance of Maldonado,” Liempe pointed out.
In addition, she denounced the government for “protecting the powerful who are exterminating our brothers and sisters in the different provinces of our country.”
Today, Monday 14 of August, are 13 days of the disappearance of Santiago Maldonado (28). Witnesses say they saw him for the last time in the hands of the National Gendarmerie, which is a federal force and, therefore, is under the responsibility of the national government.
The Mapuche community had mobilized last August 1st to ask for the release of Facundo Jones Huala, leader of the Lof Cushamen of Chubut imprisoned for fighting for Mapuche lands appropriated by the Benetton company and other big landowners.
